Gladiators of the NFL Combine
The concept of the NFL Combine isn’t anything new. They’ve been having combines for Centuries. An ancient concept of a combine called a Ludus was one shown here on The STARZ Channel’s Spartucus: Blood and Sand, where Gladiators performed to levels where very few men have gone. It is an ultimate goal of a Gladiator to attain personal freedom by out performing others in order to stay alive in the arena. There are subtle differences between the eras of the Combine concept, although the idea remains the same. Who is the best as they prepare for battle and who can gain his Masters good faith and earn good “coin”. As is the same for players of today having a goal to be milli-seconds ahead of others in the 40 yd dash in order to be a top first round pick. You can notice instead of Swords and shields used in the days of yore, players of today use footballs and cones. The attire has changed as well.
Instead of cloth coverings and nakedness, players today use tight aerodynamic spandex “nutters” to increase speed in order to achieve their financial freedom. Also some differences between yesteryear and today is that of Agents. Players today can assert themselves to avoid certain activities such as passing a football say, because their Agents said not to. Gladiators of yore who did’t perform to what was necessary were thrown into the pit of no return. Also Masters wives had their way with any Gladiator they wanted. Today players have their way with any wives they want. After a hard day in the ludus Gladiators went back to their prison cells and ate mush. Today players after a day in the Combine they go back to the Marriott and get some cheeseburgers. As we move closer to the NFL Draft, just remember that any player who achives his goal to become a first round pick, only attained that through hard
work from the NFL Combine. Those that get drafted but not in the first round, well that means harder work for you to prove yourself. For those who don’t get drafted at all, well I guess you’ll just have to get a job like the rest of us. Just feel lucky you weren’t born in those ancient times or you could have been thrown into the arena to get romped! . . . . Or eaten!
